Recognizing Excellence in Education

VFW Post 4190 proudly participates in the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teach Program to award VFW Teacher's of the Year, which recognizes exceptional educators who promote civic responsibility, patriotism, and American history in their classrooms.
Teachers play a vital role in shaping future generations. Through this program, the VFW honors teachers who inspire students to become informed and engaged citizens while fostering an appreciation for the sacrifices made by America's veterans and military families.
How to Participate
Completed nomination packets may be submitted to: VFW Post 4190, 2309 Veterans Drive SE, Decatur, AL 35601
Eligibility
Both public and private school teachers are eligible for nomination. Eligible nominees must teach in a classroom setting and be employed full-time in one of the following categories:
- Kindergarten through 5th Grade
- 6th through 8th Grade
- 9th through 12th Grade
Recognition Levels
Outstanding educators selected advance through multiple levels of competition:
- VFW Post 4190
- VFW District 1
- VFW Department of Alabama
- Veterans of Foreign Wars National Competition
Teachers selected at each level receive recognition for their dedication to education, citizenship, and patriotism.
Nomination Process
Nominations may be submitted by fellow teachers, supervisors, students, parents, veterans, or members of the community. The nomination packet should highlight how the teacher:
- Promotes citizenship and patriotism
- Encourages community involvement
- Teaches American history and democratic values
- Inspires students through leadership and service
- Supports veterans and military-connected families
