VFW Post 4190 is much more than a place to gather. Our Post exists first and foremost to serve veterans, active-duty service members, and their families here in Decatur and the surrounding communities. Everything we do is guided by the VFW mission of "Honoring the dead by helping the living,” a mission that continues to shape our work through service, advocacy, and outreach, not simply as a social space.
A large part of our impact happens outside the Post walls. Through the national VFW, we are part of one of the strongest veteran advocacy organizations in the country. Many of the state and federal benefits veterans rely on today exist because the VFW fought for them. At the local level, Post 4190 supports this mission by staying informed on legislative issues that affect our veterans and by encouraging civic engagement to ensure elected officials keep their commitments to those who served. Protecting VA healthcare, reducing claims backlogs, and opposing legislation that shifts costs onto veterans remain priorities we stand behind.
One of the most direct ways Post 4190 serves veterans is by helping them understand and access their earned benefits. Our Post Benefits Advisor works directly with veterans and their families to help them navigate the VA system, file claims, and understand next steps when challenges arise. Veterans who feel overwhelmed by the process are not left to figure it out alone Post 4190 ensures they have knowledgeable, trusted guidance and support.
Supporting veterans through every stage of life is central to our mission. Post 4190 is committed to assisting disabled veterans, homeless veterans, and veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress or traumatic brain injuries. Veterans helping veterans is a powerful bond, and no one understands the lasting effects of military service better than fellow combat veterans. We also recognize the important role families play and work to help them understand and support their loved ones.
Post 4190 is equally committed to supporting those who are currently serving and their families. We take pride in standing alongside active-duty service members, reservists, and National Guard members by supporting military families, recognizing deployments, and participating in events that show our appreciation for their service. We believe strongly in supporting the entire military family, not just the individual in uniform.
Community service is a defining part of Post 4190’s identity. Our members regularly give their time and resources to honor veterans and support the wider community. Through remembrance ceremonies, youth engagement, support for first responders, charitable giving, and volunteer efforts, Post 4190 works to make a positive difference for people from all walks of life.
The future of the VFW is also a priority for Post 4190. Veterans aged 45 and younger are the fastest-growing group within the organization. Many younger veterans choose to join because they understand the value of advocacy, benefit protection, and veteran-to-veteran support even if they do not plan to spend time at the Post. Through our website, social media, and community outreach, Post 4190 works to remain relevant, welcoming, and accessible to veterans of all generations.
Membership in VFW Post 4190 matters. It strengthens our ability to advocate for veterans, serve our community, and ensure the VFW remains a strong voice for those who have served today and for generations to come. Younger veterans are not only welcome; they are essential to shaping the future of our Post and continuing the mission we are proud to uphold.
